Compare and Contrast Essay Sample on Chimpanzee Vs White Cheeked Gibbon Observation: Chimpanzee vs White Cheeked Gibbon An observation was conducted at Lincoln Park Zoo of two species of Apes. The observation was of Chimpanzee and White Cheeked Gibbon. All the observation took place in the morning when the species were active and very play full. The observation covered the characteristics of the species with their comparison and also their behaviors. Characteristics of species one-Chimpanzee Chimpanzees are classified under mammals in the order of primates. Their Latin name is Pan Troglodytes. They can reach up to 3 to 4 à ½ feet in height and they weigh between 100 and 150 pounds. The male are heavier than the female. Baby chimpanzees seemed to way between 3 to 5 pounds. It was observed that the chimpanzees stay in group of 10 and more, the groups have more female than male and at least three children. Their bodies are thickset with long arms and short legs with no tail. The long arms grip firmly the trees when they are swinging. Their bodies are covered with long black hair except for the ears, face, fingers and toes. Some have whiskers on their chin. They also have flat face, small nose and forward facing eyes. They move in arboreal setting by swinging, clinging and climbing to branches. They use their long arms to swing from branch to branch. They have opposable thumbs except that they are shorter than those of humans. Chimpanzees are quadruped, they move on all fours. When walking, they use their knuckles for support with their finger half flexed. This movement is because of the shorter legs and longer arms. They also have opposable toes with good strength of griping. Chimps are capable of bipedal locomotion. This means that they can walk upright on two legs other than using the four limbs. They only do that when they need to carry something in their hands. They spend same time in the ground compared to the time they spend in the trees. Characteristics of specie two- White Cheeked Gibbon White Cheeked Gibbons are classified under mammals in the order of primates. Their Latin name is Nomascus leucogenys. They can reach up to 18 to 25 inches in height and they weigh between 10 and 20 pounds. The male are heavier than the female. Baby Gibbons seemed to way between 1 to 2 pounds. It was observed that the white cheeked gibbons live in small groups of five; the groups are families of male, female and their children. Their bodies are lightly built with long arms and legs with no tail. The long arms grip firmly the trees when they are swinging. Their bodies are covered with fur with their head covered with long fur. The male are black in color with a small part in the face around the cheek is covered with white fur. The female are blonde. They have a flat face and small nose. They move in arboreal setting by swinging, clinging and climbing to branches and also a style known as brachiation. They form a loose hook around the branch that allows them move through trees using hand over hand motion. They have opposable thumbs except that they are shorter than those of humans. Their long hands and limbs can allow them to cover more than 10 feet in one swing. White cheeked gibbons walk on their hind legs suspending their arms to maintain balance. They rarely stay on the ground. Comparison of the two species The two species have some similar characteristics. Both the chimps and white cheeked gibbons are of the same classification of mammals and order of primate. The both species do not have tails. They all are quadruped and bidruped. Both male of the two species are black in color. The two species both have a flat face and small nose. The two species also have some difference. The chimps are much heavier than the white cheeked gibbons. The chimps have long arms and short limbs while the white cheeked gibbons have both long arms and limbs. The chimps are covered with hair while the white cheeked gibbons are covered with fur. The chimps support themselves using the knuckles while swinging. The white cheeked gibbons on the other hand, use their arms to maintain balance by suspending them while swinging, Behavior of Chimpanzee Based on ad libitum observation, it was noted that the chimpanzees live in large groups. It was noted that they chew leaves. Chimpanzees also walk erect for short distance. It was noted that they are agile climbers and are rest less during the day. They love eating fruits and some eat insects by picking them with twigs or grass stems. The female chimps do not like to stay where the sun is direct to them. They also made various sound while jumping and swinging especially in the morning. During the focal sampling, each activity of the species was given at most 15 minutes in order to learn who they truly behave. It was observed that chimps live in large group consisting of different male and female groups. The groups were very flexible. It was observed that chimps chew leaves then dip them in water to suck out the moisture in them. They also eat lots of fruits and insects. They used twigs and grass stems to poke at ants and termite nests. Once the insects cling on them, the chimps eat them. It was observed that during the day the chimps spend their time in the ground and for short distances they walk using their limbs only. It was also observed that they built nest high up in trees by bending branches and intertwining them. Some chimps built their nests in the ground. It was observed that the female avoided direct sun. For those seen exposed, their bare skin on the bottom became swollen and pink. Most time when they were exposed to the sun, it was an indication that t hey want to mate. It was noted that the chimps like touching each other a lot and they kiss when meeting. They hold hands and groom each other. They are very friendly and maintain good relationship among themselves The female seemed to give their young ones much attention and also they help in babysitting chores. It was noted that the chimpanzees produce loud sound mainly for communication with each other. They also drum on hollow trees and clap their hands. When they are angry, they stand upright and wave their arms. They also throw branches or rocks to show they are angry. The focal sampling method of observation was much better compared to the ad libitum method. One could not that the femaleââ¬â¢s bottoms turned color. It was not expected to find the chimps kissing, something they do more often. Behavior of species two Based on ad libitum observation, it was noted that the white cheeked gibbons stay in small family groups of five or less. It was noted that they eat lots of leaves, flowers and insects. They spend all there time up in the trees swing from branch to branch. It was noted that they love swinging in very tiny branches. They love eating fruits and some eat insects by picking them with twigs or grass stems. They also made various sound while jumping and swinging. During the focal sampling, each activity of the species was given at most 15 minutes in order to learn who they truly behave. It was observed that chimps live in small; family groups consisting of two matting team and an infant. . It was observed that they eat a lot of leaves, insect and flowers. They also chased small birds. They spent most of their time up in the tree swinging and searching for food. The female seemed to give their young ones much concern. The young ones cling on their mother bottom while breastfeed. Early in the morning the gibbons produces same vocal sound, a tradition to them. It was also a sign of marking their boundaries by the males. The white cheeked gibbons like grooming each other especially the hair. It was also observed that they have a high sense of hearing. They also seemed to avoid the water when they were in the ground. The focal sampling method of observation was best to describe the behavior of the white cheeked gibbons. It was easy to note that they do not like water at all. They also did not like staying on the ground, something it was not expected. It was noted that the white cheeked bones chased bird, something unusual. It is hard to say they eat birds but why would they be chasing them. Comparison There a lot of similarities between these two species. They both produce loud sound in the morning. The female of these both two species give much attention to their young ones. The males of these both species mark their territories by producing loud and aggressive sounds. They both love grooming each other. The difference between the two species is that that the chimps stay a lot on then ground compared to the white cheeked bones which do not like at all. The chimps are used been in water unlike the white cheeked gibbons who avoid water. The chimps mate more than the white cheeked gibbons. It is also clear that chimps stay in large groups of mixed groups while the white cheeked gibbons stay in family groups. The chimps are each other, a behavior that is not seen in white checked gibbons. The white cheeked gibbons are not as friendly as the chimpanzees. The white cheeked gibbons do not build nest like the chimps. It was also noted that chimps are friendly to humans compared to the wh ite cheeked gibbons. Or, to put it another way, writing young adult fiction seems to be at an all-time high. Thereââ¬â¢s something about adolescence - coming of age, first loves, first triumphs, loss of innocence - that makes it the perfect backdrop for raw, honest storytelling. No matter how far we get away from them in time, the memories of our teenage years tend to remain fresh.Kate Angelella is an experienced YA editor, formerly of Simon Schuster. She has edited a number of popular series including Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys. In this post, she shares her top tips for writing Young Adult fiction. 1. Donââ¬â¢t think of YA as ââ¬Ëadult fiction thatââ¬â¢s been dumbed-downââ¬â¢Some of my favorite YA novelists are accidental childrenââ¬â¢s book authors. YA pioneer Francesca Lia Block - and author/maven of some of the most lyrical prose youââ¬â¢ll find this side of Gabriel Garcà a Mrquez - is a fine example. She did not intend to write her cult classic Weetzie Bat series as childrenââ¬â¢s books, but Weetzie was destined to be a YA protagonist for the ages, doing and saying things while she came of age that would make Holden Caulfield blush, and the rest of us rejoice.Though your characterââ¬â¢s voice should be authentic to her identity and life experience, you never have to (and never should) simplify the language, story, or style choices in your novel in order to talk down to teen readers. YA authors should aspire to write at least as well as they would for adult fiction- and there are innumerable examples of YA fiction that outshine even the prettiest prose adult lit-fic has to offer. #YA Tip 1: Young Adult isn't just dumbed-down mainstream fiction. 2. Make sure your characters are the right ageDisney's adaptation of 'The Princess Diaries'Cabot also employs repetition to communicate her main character, Miaââ¬â¢s voice. Note in the first paragraph how two sentences in a row begin with ââ¬Å"heââ¬â¢s cool ifâ⬠and the next several sentences begin with ââ¬Å"heââ¬â¢s NOT so cool if.â⬠Heââ¬â¢s cool if youââ¬â¢re Lilly Moscovitz.Heââ¬â¢s cool if youââ¬â¢re good at Algebraâ⬠¦.Heââ¬â¢s not so cool if youââ¬â¢re flunking Algebra, like me.Heââ¬â¢s not so cool if he makes you stay after schoolâ⬠¦.Heââ¬â¢s not so cool if he calls your motherâ⬠¦then ASKS HER OUT.And heââ¬â¢s not so cool if heââ¬â¢s sticking his tongue in your momââ¬â¢s mouth.Almost as though sheââ¬â¢s ticking items off a list. Through the repetition, you can feel her attitude. There is some snarkiness and drama present here, but note that itââ¬â¢s not off-putting or snarky to the point of meanness or cr uelty, which would make us dislike her. Mia is pretty justified in feeling what sheââ¬â¢s feeling here, and sheââ¬â¢s not overly sarcastic. There are a few places where Cabot uses caps lock to get across Miaââ¬â¢s dramatic nature, but sheââ¬â¢s not so ridiculous that weââ¬â¢re rolling our eyes.The next example is from the opening of MT Andersonââ¬â¢s Feed.We went to the moon to have fun, but the moon turned out to completely suck.We went on a Friday, because there was shit-all to do at home. It was the beginning of spring break. Everything at home was boring. Link Arwaker was like, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m so null,â⬠and Marty was like, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m null too, unit,â⬠but I mean we were all pretty null, because for the last like hour weââ¬â¢d been playing with three uninsulated wires that were coming out of the wall. We were trying to ride shocks off them. So Marty told us there was this fun place for lo-grav on the moon. Lo-grav can be kind of stupid, bu t this was supposed to be good.Probably one of my favorite first lines in any book, ever. We went to the moon to have fun, but the moon turned out to completely suck. What does this sentence say about the main character, Titus, and the world he lives in?The language is casual like in Cabotââ¬â¢s example, but thereââ¬â¢s a different feel to this voice. While Miaââ¬â¢s voice felt a bit dramatic, Titus seems just the opposite. ââ¬Å"Shit-allâ⬠to do. Boring. Stupid. Without it being stated outright, Titus comes across as kind of apathetic and impassive. And though there are some words in there that Anderson has made up (null, unit) we are able to understand through context and tone that these words, too, are adding to the generally cool, dispassionate feel of Titusââ¬â¢ voice.The last example comes from the opening chapter of The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, which hit #1 on the New York Times Bestseller list its first week out. Itââ¬â¢s a novel that explores police brutality and systemic racism in America.We break out the crowd. Big Dââ¬â¢s house is packed wall-to-wall. Iââ¬â¢ve always heard that everybody and their momma comes to his spring break parties- well, everybody except me- but damn, I didnââ¬â¢t know it would be this many people. Girls wear their hair colored, curled, laid, and slayed. Got me feeling basic as hell with my ponytail. Guys in their freshest kicks and sagging pants grind so close to girls they just about need condoms. My nana likes to say that spring brings love, but it promises babies in the winter. I wouldnââ¬â¢t be surprised if a lot of them are conceived the night of Big Dââ¬â¢s party. He always has it on the Friday of spring break because you need Saturday to recover and Sunday to repent.Starr is the narrator: her voice is thick on the page. Take the sentence: Girls wear their hair colored, curled, laid, and slayed. You can feel the rhythm, the cadence of these words. Word choices like ââ¬Å"mommaâ ⬠and ââ¬Å"everybody.â⬠Slang like ââ¬Å"kicksâ⬠and ââ¬Å"basic,â⬠ââ¬Å"laid and slayed.â⬠From this paragraph, I can tell that Starr is very matter-of-fact. Thereââ¬â¢s no room for sarcasm or dramatics or even apathy, as in the other examples Iââ¬â¢ve read from today. Sheââ¬â¢s telling it like it is, no frills. No fuss.In all of these examples, see how the punctuation (or lack of punctuation) and sentence-and-paragraph length play a role in the feel of a voice too. #YA Tip 5: Try to nail your protagonist's way of speaking (and don't try to make 'Fetch' happen) 6. Don't write around heavy subject matterOne of the most common statements I hear in my freelance career? ââ¬Å"My main character is a teen, but I donââ¬â¢t think my novel is YA because the content is too dark.â⬠Now Iââ¬â¢m not saying that no subject matter is too dark for the YA market (my husband, J.R. Angelella, did a superb job of showcasing that too dark can be an actual thing with his first novel, Zombie). But I will say this: remember that your target audience is experiencing sex, drugs, bad language, and all the other Big Bads you might dream up in their everyday lives, whether they are active participants or not; writing about the teen experience is what YA is all about.So long as youââ¬â¢re writing with purpose (and not just writing to be edgy), embracing heavy subject matter is essential when writing a YA novel that is both authentic and relatable. #YA Tip 6: Embrace heavy subject matter if you want to write a relatable YA novel. @kateangelella 7. Donââ¬â¢t write into trendsIt can be difficult to avoid the temptation of choosing your subject matter based on the latest Publisherââ¬â¢s Marketplace deal that just sold at auction for a ââ¬Å"major deal.â⬠But the truth is, trends in YA are fickle. By the time you get around to shopping your novel, the trend may have already passed.The surefire way to ensure that an agent, editor, or reader will fall madly in love with your book is to write about something that lights you on fire. Something you wake up every day ecstatic to write, regardless of the topicââ¬â¢s trend status. Your passion and originality will come through, and there is nothing more infectious."When reviewing YA submissions,â⬠says Melissa Nasson, Associate Agent for Rubin Pfeffer Content, ââ¬Å"one of my biggest gripes is when I start reading and immediately feel that I've read something similar before. Originality is so important, so when I sense that an author is trying to emulate Suzanne Co llins or Veronica Roth rather than telling their own story, it makes me less inclined to continue readingâ⬠¦. if I find the manuscript too familiar, then editors (and eventually readers) certainly will too." #YA Tip 7: Don't write into trends. Whenà you get to shopping your novel, the trend may have already passed 8. Papa, donââ¬â¢t preachSome call it preaching, some call it didacticism. Whatever you call it, whatever you do, please donââ¬â¢t talk down to your YA reader.By this, I mean that you should never set your main character up to take a fall simply to teach him or her a thing or two. Not only will your teen reader smell the fakey-fake lesson cooking in your prose a mile off, but your YA novel will also suffer for it. Because writing YA is not about the result at the novelââ¬â¢s conclusion; itââ¬â¢s about the journey, about finding the center of your characterââ¬â¢s emotional truth to present a very real, very relatable human being who is currently in flux, and figuring things out.YA readers deserve your emotional honesty. They deserve authentic, emotionally resonant characters that serve to show them they arenââ¬â¢t alone, not characters who are being used as tools to sell moral high ground or life lessons. #YA Tip 8: Don't try to 'teach your reader a lesson'. Fattening: The social implications on the Azawagh Arabs and the real me
Throughout the ethnography, ââ¬Å"Feeding Desireâ⬠written by Rebecca Popenoe, we see one consistent theme that is brought up time and time again ââ¬â women and the fattening of them to obtain a desired look. From the perspective of a Western third party, the idea of fattening to appear beautiful/appealing seems ridiculous. It simply makes little sense because fattening, is incredibly unhealthy, something that is recognized in Western culture and at the same time we prefer women to be as fit as possible. Looking through the ethnography we see that there are many reasons for fattening being a key factor in making women ââ¬Å"an object of desireâ⬠(Page.. citation) as stated by Popenoe. We can examine these cases through the work of Popenoe and determine as to how she came to this conclusion. At the start of the ethnography we can see from Popenoeââ¬â¢s initial experience while working with the Peace Corps in Niger, that the idea of fattening and how the women she saw originally seemed as ââ¬Å"unattractive lumberingâ⬠(Popenoe 2004: 20). It was however while working with the Peace Corps that Popenoe noticed that this rounded shape that was the norm among the women and was far more appreciated and desired. After having decided to live with the Azawagh Arabs, Popenoe expresses the obvious indication of her being the outcast when it came to female sexual competition shown through the statement, ââ¬Å"With collar bones protruding and not a stretchmark to be found on my upper arms, I believe many women considered me a poor specimen of my sex.â⬠(2004: 20). Even though it is shown that women and men are usually separate, Popenoeââ¬â¢s lack of physical beauty as per the Azawagh Arab women, allowed her to communicate with the men with no fear from the women that... ...dent that his job in gathering better subsistence is going very well, likely meaning he is wealthy. It is not something which is meant to show off, but just happens in cases of abundance (2004: 112). Most importantly is the control a woman can have over their husband, by waiting till the night to discuss what is on their mind as that is the point in the time where a man canââ¬â¢t refuse them, their lust and sexual desire forces them to listen pretty much. Popenoe does an excellent job in her ethnography giving us the perspective of the Azawagh Arab society. We see how the culture is in such a society where women are fattened for many reasons that are important such as sexual desire, marriage, and the passage towards womanhood. Such fattening has run societies in the area including the Azawagh Arabs since they were discovered and continue to do so today.

Participation is dynamic process aimed at involving the masses so that they can formulate their own end goals and work together to realise them. Masses cannot be forced to participate in projects which affect their lives but should be given the opportunity where possible. Empowerment Empowerment is an initiated process that enables the masses to gain power and extend it in such a way that they can use this power to share in changing social, economic and political structures. Empowerment is successful if the participants regard the result of their action as beneficial. Therefore participation is a cornerstone of empowerment. It is a prerequisite for achieving empowerment. Empowerment is one of the consequences of participation, which means that if we want masses to gain power, they must participate. Empowerment is generally seen as a key for good quality of life, increased human dignity, good governance, pro-poor growth, project effectiveness and improved service delivery (Narayan. 2002. 8.). Bureaucracy It means the structure and set of regulations that control the activities of people that work for these organizations. It is characterized by standardized procedure (rule-following), formal division of responsibility, hierarchy, and impersonal relationships. Bureaucratic leader are concerned with ensuring workers follow rules and procedures accurately and consistently. The bureaucracy does not create or initiate policy, but it does implement policy decisions. Why mass participation and empowerment are important Empowerment puts people at the centre of the development process; it implies a participatory approach to development focusing on bottom-up approaches rather than top-down bureaucratic methods. Empowerment increases the capabilities of the poor to influence and hold accountable the institutions that provide for them. To this end, empowerment attempts to give power and knowledge to rural communities to assist in creating a better quality of life, so that in the future they will have the skills to rely less on external forces to provide vital services and infrastructure. Mass participation is an essential part of the process of good local governance, and empowerment. To be meaningful, these processes must be seen as fundamental values of Healthy Cities and so must be developed as an integral part of long-term strategic development. Empowerment of mass is associated with cleaner business and government, and better governance. Specifically, the greater their involvement in public life, the lower the level of corruption, even in countries with the same income, civil liberties, education, and legal institutions. Masses Empowerment through inclusion, voice, and accountability can also promote social cohesion and trust, qualities that help reduce corruption, reinforce government and project performance, and provide a conducive environment for reform, with consequential benefits for development effectiveness and economic growth. Finally, empowerment or lack of it can also have positive or negative socio-political effects on the outcomes of countriesââ¬â¢ poverty reduction efforts. Why the concept of mass participation has been illusive in the third world There are some serious failures of the international community to contribute meaningfully to empowerment and participatory approaches. If countries are not willing to support countries that need help, then the future is bleak. Aid allocations need to increase if meaningful solutions are to occur. Making the rural poor involved in empowerment and participatory programs is hard to achieve due to their social exclusion. The gap between the poor in rural areas and those who are more wealthy is large and widening Because the rural poor are socially excluded, often development organisations such as the World Bank think of the poor are ignorant and complacent. More often they are not excluded from participating in projects in a meaningful way, due to pre existing biased views that they are not worthy, or indeed, have the skills to participate effectively. (Courtney et all in Godinot and Wodon (ed). 2006. 3). Lack of empowerment amongst rural people leads to their vulnerability and thus most development projects tend to benefit the benefactors rather than the beneficiaries. In light of this sustainable development is not achieved because non-participation of local people means that rural development is not self-sustaining. Therefore, local rural people play an important role in rural development because they understand their situation and problems better than the government, aid agencies and other stakeholders. This highlights the gap between the reality and ideal of empowerment and participatory development where the poor themselves are considered the centre of the process and the most vital players. Rural areas in developing countries experience large problems associated with access to basic amenities and services. Attempts to resolve this situation involve development programs using community empowerment in rural areas of developing nations to ameliorate instances of poverty. The aspirations deep inside the poor can only be brought out by making them the centre of the development process. They have difficulty expressing them due to their exclusion. How mass participation and empowerment are promoted or discouraged by the action of bureaucracy The problem with bureaucracy is that Executives want to control everything; even the simplest administrative decision has to be approved at the top. . One problem is unnecessary delays in outputs (Waterston 1965:259) , for even though there are more than enough officials in the lower administrative ranks, they are not effectively employed in the posts to which they were appointed. Political involvement of officials ââ¬â when bureaucracy becomes involved in politics, this stimulates corruption. Officials start taking decision and performing actions that will benefit themselves, or groups in which they have an interest. Corruption is out of control. Development funds are siphoned off to hire friends or relatives. In some cases the money simply disappears. The misuse of office by government functionaries is relatively common in areas of public procurement, revenue collection, government appointments and contracts, licensing and permits. In these areas of specialty, graft and venality are readily executed through anyone of the following activities: The civil servant receives from a private contractor a fixed percentage of awarded government contracts; the kickback may be in kind, such as free education for the children in foreign institutions, or in cash, paid directly into bank account. Police or other law enforcement agents use the threat of sanctions to extort bribes in lieu of official fees or taxes. But paying bribes to avoid taxes or fees is equally damaging to society since governments depend on such revenues to provide public goods. The relative absence of revenues from taxes and fees also means less compensation for civil servants, which leads to more corrupt practices. One of the reasons adduced by low- level government employees for demanding bribes is the infrequency of their monthly salary. Government employees in essential services, e.g. law enforcement, electric power supply, telecommunication etc. Customs agents insist on payments above the official rates or side payments before providing requisite services to both importers and exporters. Those unwilling to pay bribes stand the chance of losing their merchandise through forfeiture or theft. Civil servants award large contracts to companies owned by relatives or partners, and in return receive an agreed upon fee or lavish hospitality. Officials responsible for permits and licenses demand extra payment for services ordinarily called for by their office; in cases where expediency is requested, a great deal more is demanded to speed-up the process. Bureaucraciesââ¬â¢ themselves create the causes of corruption. Salaries are low, housing is poor, officials lack professional qualification and status, all of which means that officials do not feel motivated to do good work, or to be loyal to the organisation. When a countryââ¬â¢s resources are continually misallocated by corrupt government officials bent on maximizing their short-run selfish interests, development is severely hindered through a multitude of social and economic dislocations. The bureaucracy is unresponsive to the needs of the public; there is an atmosphere of officialââ¬â¢s indifference and unsympathetic attitude toward the needs of the people. This is caused by the strictly centralised nature of the bureaucracies, the lack of mass participation and consequent lack of contact with the populace. A bureaucracy, crucially, is not only a structure, a mere organigramme with functional relationships and roles. It is a group of people with lives, emotions, aspirations, energy, passion and values. Those that work in them often have strong values, great intentions and good ideas. Most want to do good and not be negative. Somehow, however, good intent can evaporate as the dynamic of the organizational ââ¬Ësystemââ¬â¢ unfolds. Can the positive virtues and potential of public sector bureaucracies and the people working in them be rediscovered? These include fostering fairness, equity, and equality of opportunity, being neutral and transparent. These are important achievements of democracy, yet the focus on efficiency can obscure these intentions. The most effective organizations are those where people feel they can be engaged and where their commitment to the organization lies beyond a contractual relationship and where a deeper emotional bond can be established both to the work itself and the organization. In these situations people feel they are able ââ¬â¢to be our true selvesââ¬â¢ and to have a ââ¬Ëcreative presenceââ¬â¢ so that working gives the sense of ââ¬Ëpregnant possibilitiesââ¬â¢ and where they can develop ââ¬Ëan intensity that feels and appears effortlessââ¬â¢. Here energy and passion can come into alignment. Conclusion /My view The participation of communities in development projects is a major aspect of an empowering approach. Participation works well at the small scale. Community based organisations if trained correctly can manage and supervise locally based construction and maintenance activities very effectively (Meshack. 2004. 61). There is a fine balance between success and failure of participation in that it needs to be locally based with little input from external forces. Governments and donors can in fact undermine contributions made by the community in that they take over projects and locals lose their sense of ownership (Meshack. 2004. 61). Participation in development projects does however need outside stakeholders but the community needs to be the one driving the project, as there are many people who can contribute to a development project. Empowerment involves expanding the capabilities of the poor. Its main process involves putting the community at the centre of the development process. The community becomes empowered due to the fact that they have a certain degree of control over their own resources, they gain a sense of ownership over the service or infrastructure being provided. One of the main concepts involved in creating efficient empowering projects include the access of the community to information, as informed citizens make better development decisions. Accountability in the development process is another crucial aspect of an empowering approach. Increasing the capabilities of the poor specifically refers to local organisational capacity. This is when a community works together to mobilise resources and tackle problems as a group. This is another major process involved in community empowerment.

This image by Sarah Ann Loretta can be described as a woman slowly drowning g in water . What makes this image stand out is the atmosphere that is being portrayed in it. It's a moody and dark atmosphere that creates the massive impact in the image. There are 3 factors that create the mood. The expression on the woman's face, the lighting and droplets of rain within the image. The photograph has a low depth of field as it is only focusing on the woman's face.It was taken in landscape format to show the length of the woman's body and this was a v ere good effect as it enhances the atmosphere within the image. This was done by creating a liar GE amount of space around the model and giving the photograph a moody and lonely ape arrange. Keeping the position of the model in the centre it creates the mood that nothing is are undo her which sustains the mood of the photograph. The colors of the photograph is mixed between whites,greens and blacks. Tit the background on the photograph being very dark and murky, Loretta enlarges the mood of the photograph by contrasting the model's clothe Eng to an innocent white, and with the model's serious expression with big, deep almost sorrows LU eyes has brought the image together. We see these representations in different ways according to our own assumptions. Representations can change over time and give us a kind of social barometer of changing representations of social groups and trends.Many media sources portray the youth in the same way, with a limited view of them as being sex obsessed. However, some material is more sensitive and sympathetic. An example would be the film Ferris Buellers Day Off, this offers quite sensitive portrayals of youth coping with relationships, authority and identity.If we look at this representation in one particular area such as the representation of young men, we can see that many media texts portray young males in a variety of ways. This is because there are many types of young males to look at and there is always a change in fashion and ideology through the years. The two texts I have chosen are both dif ferent in their representations and I shall explore these representations in detail.In the USA, since the ending of the Production Code and its replacement with the MPAA film rating system in the late 1960s, some filmmakers began to experiment with vulgar humor. The movie which pioneered the gross out comedy genre was 1972s Pink Flamingos with its infamous dog excrement eating scene, followed by 1974s sketch comedy sleeper The Groove Tube. The first movie to which the label gross-out movie was actually given to was 1978s National Lampoons Animal House, which was a great box office success and thus started a new trend. Since the 1980s, gross-out films increased in number, and became almost the norm for US comedy films. With these films being aimed at more of a younger audience from 16-25 years of age, such films include Theres Something About Mary, Porkys, American Pie and more recently Wedding Crashers.The first text I will look at is American Pie. In this film there are a range of young males who are all represented in different ways. The film is a typical American teen movie with huge parties and gross out comedy, and was heavily influenced by such films like Porkys Revenge of The Nerds. From looking at the DVD cover to the film, you can see that the main picture is a group of youths who all look relatively the same with only one standing out as different to the rest. This is showing us who the main character of the film is going to be and with him with his top off it gives the impression that this will follow the same American party style, sex obsessed film of portraying young males. If we look at three of the main characters we can get a better insight to how young males are represented. The first character to look at is the main character, Jim, in the film he is shown as the geeky, sexually frustrated one out of the boys. He is shown in the film along with the other boys making a pact to lose their virginity before their high school graduation, this goes along with the usual sex obsessed stereotype of young men in the media. Another part of the film that goes along with this view is one of the main scenes of the film where the name of the film comes from, this is when Jim is caught masturbating with an apple pie after being told 3rd base feels like warm apple pie.The next character I will look at is Steve Stifler, nicknamed Stifler, from the name you can see he will be represented as the sex god character, this is shown in the film when he says, I got laid 23 times this year and Im not counting the hummer I got in the library stacks, baby! here it is the representation of young men being obsessed with sex again. Stifler is also known as the party animal of the group, and always seems to be the main one involved in the gross out comedy in the film. The way he talks to people throughout the film is very arrogant and often seems to be a bully at times.The last character I will look at is Oz who is portrayed as a stereotypical jock, but eventually softened by a girl who told him to pay more attention to girls feelings. In the film Oz joins the jazz choir because the girls there wont have heard about his reputation as a jerk jock. Heather, the choir girl he falls for, ends up winning his heart. He confesses the pact that the guys have made to her and admits that he doesnt even care about the sex, he just wants to be with her. This is a key example of how Oz is represented as a good guy, and unlike the others isnt looking for sex.In the film there are two youth panicking over how to answer the college entrance exam question,What is your most emotionally significant moment? The girl says How am I supposed to know my most emotionally significant moment is? I have no idea what I want to doThank God, I thought I was the only one. In another scene the boys acknowledge their confusion about what they want and where they are going. One boy says, I dont know what Im doing, but the movie ends happily as they all agree they a rent supposed to know. They say, You cant plan everything and then they toast to right now and the next step. This shows the youth more as young adults thinking about the next step, but with the traditional ideology that things never work out the way you want, so why bother?The second film I have chosen to analyse is Hot Rod which is not a big box office film unlike American Pie, with less of a variety of young males represented in it. It falls in the Anchorman, Benchwarmers, Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre category of humour films. It is physical, stupid, corny, unexpected, and just plain off the wall humour.The film is about Rod Kimble who has the heart of a daredevil, but hes just not very good at it. His main goal in life is to make his deceased father proud of him through his stuntman ways, and to earn the respect of his stepfather, Frank Powell. The problem is that the only way to gain Franks respect is to whoop him in a fight, something that Rod has not yet accomplish. When Fr ank becomes ill and requires a heart transplant, Rod steps up to the challenge of raising the money needed to save Frank. Rods motivation is not necessarily love or caring, but the desire to have another chance to beat him in a fight and thus earn his respect. Just from taking a look at the plot of the story you can see how the high school comedy representation of young men is not going to appear in this film, and you will see more of a suburban representation of young men, where it portrays people as being more naive.If you take a look at the DVD cover to the film you can see the main characters of the film, with the main image being of the main character and co characters around him, like American Pie it has a montage look about it. Looking at the characters on the cover all have a nerdy look about them bar the girl, this goes along with the same ideology as American Pie where the nerd gets the girl in the end. From the dress codes of each character you can see that young males he re are represented completely different to American Pie, as in American Pie they are all dressed normal so to say, while on the cover here you have Rod in a jumpsuit type outfit which gives the impression that he doesnt get the girls which is in contrast to a main part of representation in American Pie.Again I will look at characters from the film and see how each are portrayed through what they wear and how they interact with other characters. Firstly I shall look at the main character of the film, Rod Kimble, he is shown in the film as a nerdy white boy as Jim is but doesnt have the sex obsessed ideology but rather an ambition to be a stunt man and prove to his step dad he is a man. This story line gives us the impression he is not the most coolest of people and shows males from suburban areas as being less intelligent and more idiotic. Also in the film he drives a rundown moped, when you first see this you cant help but laugh, this could be the media saying that young males are a joke. Rod also has a fake moustache he wears when doing stunts saying,All great men have moustaches.Giving the interpretation that young males want to seem older than what they are by growing stupid looking moustaches or in this case wearing a fake one, again with the idea that young males are idiots and a joke. This also is shown in the way he speaks as the quote above shows.The next character I will look at is Rods slightly younger step brother, Kevin, who is a skinny boy with a bowl hair cut and wears retro style tops tucked into his skin tight jeans pulled up to his waist, this gives him a dorky look and quite a retro appearance which you can see in such films as Superbad through the character Evan. In the film he looks up to Rod and sees him as role model, this is a stereotypical younger brother attitude.Both films have uses and gratifications for the viewer with the main one for each being the entertainment value they have through the comedy used. There is a sexual gratificat ion in both films for each gender, with attractive males and females in both films. They offer the audience social gratification giving people the chance to talk about the films to one another in everyday life, and to an extent both films have role models for the audience to look up to and sympathise for. Again in both of the films there is a fairytale ending, in Hot Rod where he gets the girl and his step dads respect and in American Pie where Jim also gets the girl and everything is back to normal.

Examples of Mixed Metaphors and Cliches As defined in our glossary, a mixed metaphor is a succession of incongruous or ludicrous comparisons. When two or more metaphors (or cliches) are jumbled together, often illogically, we say that these comparisons are mixed. In Garners Modern American Usage, Bryan A. Garner offers this classic example of a mixed metaphor from a speech by Boyle Roche in the Irish Parliament: Mr. Speaker, I smell a rat. I see him floating in the air. But mark me, sir, I will nip him in the bud. This sort of mixed metaphor may occur when a speaker is so familiar with the figurative sense of a phrase (smell a rat, nip in the bud) that he fails to recognize the absurdity that results from a literal reading. Now and then a writer may deliberately introduce mixed metaphors as a way of exploring an idea. Consider this example from British journalist Lynne Truss: Well, if punctuation is the stitching of language, language comes apart, obviously, and all the buttons fall off. If punctuation provides the traffic signals, words bang into each other and everyone ends up in Minehead. If one can bear for a moment to think of punctuation marks as those invisibly beneficent fairies (Im sorry), our poor deprived language goes parched and pillowless to bed. And if you take the courtesy analogy, a sentence no longer holds the door open for you to walk in, but drops it in your face as you approach. Some readers may be amused by this sort of metaphorical mix; others may find it tiresomely twee. In most cases, mixed metaphors are accidental, and the haphazard juxtaposition of images is likely to be more comical or perplexing than revealing. So stick these examples in your pipe and chew them over. Public school facilities depend heavily on the economy of the place of its operation and any fluctuations in local economy can adversely affect the public school system. The salaries of the teachers in public schools are cheaper when we compare it to the salaries obtained by the private schools.
